The Annual Wanganui Junk Sale

The first of these sales was to be held in the Druids Hall but, because of its unavailability, took place in the Buffalo Hall, St Georges Gate on the 16th September 1961: Auctioneer was Ian Kerr, ZL2AFR.

Two XYLs, Barbara and Eileen (Crane?) and John Emanuel were thanked for “making afternoon tea for us.” The Branch made about £19.00 from the day’s efforts.

The March 1962 Meeting decided to hold that year’s Sale in May so that “Farmers from distant places will be able to attend.” St Peter’s Church, 26th May was decided on. The meeting decreed that commission would be at the rate of 15%. This year’s sale raised £18.00 and a donation of two Guineas was made to the Church.

July 1963 minutes records Bill ZL2AMV's concern that the Junk Sale should be adver-tised and it was decided that 7th September at St Peter's would be OK.

The April 1964 Meeting decided on 15th August for that year's Sale. The July Meeting was informed that the Venue was to be The Amateur Dramatic Society's Hall (AmDram) with Mr Alan Mitchell, Licensed Auctioneer. Afternoon tea was to be laid on free of charge, donation requested!! This Sale realised a profit of £26- 6 shillings & 5 pence (includes a sum of £6/17/6 from donations).

The May 1965 had a short discussion on a future junk sale was held with details to be “ironed out” at the next meeting. June’s discussions resulted in the 21 August 1965 at AmDram being settled on. Soft drinks were to be bought off Strath and sold at the sale and Afternoon tea: ‘Members to have a quiet word to their XYLs’!!!! Suggested start time 12.30pm. The September Meeting elected to Honorary Membership Mr Alan Mitchell for his services to the last two Sales.

1966’s Junk Sale was set down for 20th August at the Railway Social Hall, Auctioneer Ian Kerr ZL2AFR.

Bill ZL2AMV recommended to the Nov meeting that “the 1967 Junk Sale be held in May so as to have the Sale out of the way before the Change to Decimal Currency. A decision was deferred until the December meeting where it was decided to bring the date forward to the May School holidays

The April 1967 Meeting set the Sale date of 20th May with an 11.30am start at the AmDram Hall.

After much discussion at the 1 July 1968 meeting it was moved by Don ZL2JA, seconded by Harold ZL2AYS, that the date of the Junk Sale be fixed at the 1st Saturday in May. Hence the ’traditional’ first Saturday in May Sale date!

A new ‘high-power’ Amdram Committee all regular users of their Hall the heave-ho from 1979 so that year’s sale was held in the St John Ambulance Hall. This venue was a step-up for us and was used until the 1999 (when the hall was sold off) and we QSYed to the St Paul’s Church Hall. The May 1993 Sale was organized by Graham ZL2AHR who took the job on after Barry ZL2RR retired from the position after 19 years. A last minute cancellation of our 2005 booking for this Hall (as they could not guarantee that the wreckers would not have razed the structure before our booked date saw us QSY to the Wanganui Intermediate School Hall and the 2006 46th Sale will also be held at the same venue.

Will the Sale see its Golden Jubilee?? Ummmm….!

Members elected our Auctioneer, Mr Ian Stephens, an Honorary Member of Branch 48 NZART in 1996 giving due recognition to his valued services over many years.
